“A frog is sitting between two bars ...” is not the beginning of a joke involving a drunk amphibian, but might have something to do with a horse’s hooves. An Andalusian broodmare returning to heat is not sick of the cold and trying to get back to Spain, but about to make her owner, an enthusiastic breeder, frown. There are countless examples of equestrian jargon like this, which often leaves “outsiders” utterly confused.
Conversely, anyone who has anything to do with horses immediately realises when a text or translation has been written by someone who is not familiar with the subject matter. At best, the text simply sounds awkward. Serious mistranslations, on the other hand, can greatly damage your credibility.
To avoid this, choose a translator who has earned her spurs and is double performance-tested, both as a graduate agricultural engineer/stud groom and a state-certified translator for English and German.
